California Earthquake Safety Checklist 2025

Living in California means enjoying beautiful landscapes and vibrant communities—but it also means being prepared for earthquakes. Here's a straightforward checklist to help you and your loved ones stay safe before, during, and after a quake. Is your California home earthquake-ready? Use this quick safety checklist to protect your family before the next big shake.

1. SECURE YOUR SPACE

  • Anchor heavy furniture like bookcases and cabinets to walls.
  • Use latches on drawers and cabinets to prevent them from flying open.
  • Secure TVs, computers, and other electronics with straps or Velcro.
  • Place heavy items on lower shelves to reduce the risk of falling.
  • Ensure your water heater is strapped securely to prevent tipping.

2. CREATE AN EMERGENCY KIT (Prepare supplies to last at least 72 hours)

  • Water: 1 gallon per person per day.
  • Non-perishable food and a manual can opener.
  • Flashlights with extra batteries.
  • First-aid kit.
  • Portable phone charger or power bank.
  • Whistle to signal for help.
  • Personal hygiene items.
  • Blankets or sleeping bags.
  • Extra cash, as ATMs may not work.
  • Copies of important documents (ID, insurance, medical records).

3. MAKE A FAMILY EMERGENCY PLAN

  • Designate a safe meeting spot outside your home.
  • Choose an out-of-area contact person for family check-ins.
  • Ensure everyone knows emergency contact numbers.
  • Practice earthquake drills regularly (“Drop, Cover, and Hold On”).

4. PREPARE FOR PETS

  • Have food, water, and supply ready for your pets.
  • Keep leashes, carriers, and ID tags accessible.

🌐 During the Earthquake: Stay Safe

  • Drop to your hands and knees to prevent being knocked over.

  • Cover your head and neck under sturdy furniture or with your arms.

  • Hold On until the shaking stops.

  • Stay indoors away from windows; if outside, move to an open area away from buildings and power lines.

  • If driving, pull over safely and stop. Avoid overpasses and bridges.

🔄 After the Earthquake: Assess and Act

  • Check yourself and others for injuries.

  • Inspect your home for damage; evacuate if unsafe.

  • Be prepared for aftershocks; they can occur minutes to days after the initial quake.

  • Use text messages or social media to communicate; phone lines may be overloaded.

  • Listen to local news for emergency updates and instructions.

Remember: Earthquakes can happen without warning, but being prepared can make all the difference. Share this guide with friends and family to help everyone stay safe.
